6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

Explore Tours

The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Africa’s highest mountain. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro that offers comfortable mountain huts instead of camping in tents. This makes it an excellent option for climbers who prefer sleeping in sheltered accommodation while still enjoying the incredible experience of reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Unlike the standard 5-day itinerary, the 6-day Marangu Route includes an additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. This extra day gives your body more time to adapt to the altitude, significantly improving your chances of reaching the summit safely and successfully. The route passes through five unique ecological zones, beginning in lush rainforest before climbing through moorland, alpine desert, and finally reaching the arctic summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This additional acclimatization day is widely recommended because it increases summit success compared with the shorter version of the route.

At Wakati Safari Adventure, we combine experienced mountain guides, high-quality equipment, nutritious meals, and personalised service to ensure your Kilimanjaro adventure is both safe and memorable from beginning to end.

Why Choose the Marangu Route?

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is especially popular among climbers who prefer sleeping in mountain huts rather than tents.

Throughout the climb, you’ll stay in permanent huts equipped with bunk beds, mattresses, communal dining areas, and basic washroom facilities. The trail itself is well maintained and relatively straightforward, making it suitable for many first-time high-altitude trekkers who have prepared well physically.

The 6-day itinerary includes a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. During this day, you hike to a higher elevation before returning to sleep at the same altitude, following the important “climb high, sleep low” principle that helps your body adjust to the mountain environment.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation

  • Start: 1,860 metres
  • Camp: 2,700 metres

Distance: Approximately 8 Kilometres

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate, where registration with Kilimanjaro National Park takes place.

After meeting your mountain crew and completing the necessary formalities, your trek officially begins.

Today’s trail passes through dense tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, colourful flowers, ferns, and moss-covered branches. The cool forest environment is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and many colourful bird species.

The gentle ascent allows you to settle into a comfortable walking rhythm while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Upon reaching Mandara Hut, your guides will prepare a hot meal while you relax and enjoy your first evening on Africa’s highest mountain.

If time allows, you may take a short walk to Maundi Crater, where excellent views of northern Tanzania and Kenya can often be enjoyed.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Mandara Hut

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation

  • Start: 2,700 metres
  • Camp: 3,720 metres

Distance: Approximately 12 Kilometres

Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind as the trail enters the heath and moorland zone.

The landscape changes dramatically with giant heather, everlasting flowers, lobelias, and giant groundsels replacing the dense forest.

As you continue climbing, spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak begin to appear while Kibo Peak gradually dominates the horizon.

The open landscape offers excellent photography opportunities, and on clear days you can enjoy sweeping views across northern Tanzania.

Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, your guides will conduct a routine health check to monitor your acclimatization before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Maximum Elevation: Approximately 4,000–4,200 metres

Return Elevation: 3,720 metres

Hiking Time: 2–4 Hours

Today is dedicated to acclimatization, one of the most important factors for a successful summit.

After breakfast, you will take a gentle hike toward Zebra Rocks or the lower slopes of Mawenzi before returning to Horombo Hut for the night.

This short climb allows your body to experience higher altitude before descending to sleep at a lower elevation, helping reduce the effects of altitude sickness while preparing you for the summit.

The remainder of the afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and enjoying the magnificent mountain scenery.

Your guides will continue monitoring your health and provide advice on hydration, nutrition, and pacing for the days ahead.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation

  • Start: 3,720 metres
  • Camp: 4,700 metres

Distance: Approximately 10 Kilometres

Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours

Today’s hike crosses the vast alpine desert known as “The Saddle,” a broad plateau lying between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks.

The landscape here is completely different from previous days, with very little vegetation surviving at this altitude.

Although today’s trail is not technically difficult, the thinner air means a slow and steady pace is essential.

After arriving at Kibo Hut, you will enjoy an early dinner before preparing your equipment for summit night.

Your guides will conduct a final briefing, checking clothing, headlamps, water supplies, and safety equipment before encouraging everyone to get several hours of rest.

Around midnight, your summit adventure begins.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut

Elevation

  • Summit: 5,895 metres
  • Overnight: 3,720 metres

Distance: Approximately 22 Kilometres

Hiking Time: 11–15 Hours

Shortly after midnight, you leave Kibo Hut under a sky filled with countless stars.

Moving slowly together, your team climbs across volcanic scree while your guides carefully monitor everyone’s pace and wellbeing.

After several hours of determined effort, you reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing along the breathtaking summit ridge.

As the first light of dawn spreads across East Africa, the glaciers surrounding the summit begin to glow in the early morning sunlight.

Soon afterwards, you reach Uhuru Peak, standing proudly at 5,895 metres above sea level.

This is the highest point in Africa and a truly unforgettable achievement.

Take time to celebrate, capture photographs, and enjoy the remarkable views before beginning your descent.

After returning to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch, you continue descending to Horombo Hut, where a well-earned dinner and comfortable night’s sleep await.

Although this is the longest and most demanding day of the expedition, it is also the most rewarding.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation

  • Start: 3,720 metres
  • Finish: 1,860 metres

Distance: Approximately 20 Kilometres

Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours

Your final morning begins with breakfast before descending through the beautiful moorland and rainforest zones.

As the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen, many climbers find the descent relaxing and enjoyable despite tired legs.

The familiar forest trails provide one final opportunity to appreciate Kilimanjaro’s remarkable biodiversity.

Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete the park’s exit formalities before receiving your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate.

Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower, comfortable bed, and celebration await.

Although the climb has ended, the memories of reaching the Roof of Africa and the friendships formed along the journey will stay with you forever.
