7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route
Explore Tours
The 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route offers a unique and rewarding journey to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. As the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Kenyan border, Rongai provides a quieter and more remote trekking experience compared to the busier southern routes. It is known for its gradual ascent, beautiful wilderness, and excellent opportunities for acclimatization, making it one of the best choices for climbers looking for a less crowded trail with a high chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Unlike routes that begin in dense rainforest, the Rongai Route starts in a beautiful pine forest before gradually ascending through moorland, alpine desert, and finally into the arctic zone near the summit. Along the way, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of Kenya’s plains, the rugged Mawenzi Peak, and the vast landscapes surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro.
The 7-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn, allowing your body to adjust more gradually to the altitude and significantly increasing your chances of a successful summit. This version is widely recommended over the shorter six-day option because the extra time greatly improves acclimatization.
At Wakati Safari Adventure, our experienced mountain guides, dedicated porters, professional cooks, and commitment to safety ensure that your Kilimanjaro climb becomes one of the most memorable adventures of your life.

Why Choose the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route is perfect for climbers seeking a quieter and more peaceful Kilimanjaro experience. Because it approaches the mountain from the northern side, it generally receives less rainfall than the southern routes, making it an excellent option during wetter months.
The gradual ascent reduces physical strain while allowing your body to adapt naturally to increasing altitude. The route also offers spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak, the Kenyan plains, and Kilimanjaro’s northern wilderness.
Unlike many other routes, the descent follows the Marangu Route, allowing you to experience two different sides of Mount Kilimanjaro during one expedition.
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Elevation
- Start: 1,950 metres
- Camp: 2,625 metres
Distance: Approximately 8 Kilometres
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Your adventure begins after breakfast with a scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha to Rongai Gate, located on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border.
After completing registration at Kilimanjaro National Park, you will meet your mountain crew before beginning your climb.
The trail starts by passing through small farming communities where maize and potatoes are grown before entering a peaceful pine forest.
The gradual trail offers an excellent introduction to the mountain and is often much quieter than other Kilimanjaro routes.
As you hike through the forest, your guide may point out black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and colourful bird species that inhabit this area.
By late afternoon, you will arrive at Simba Camp, where your tents will already be prepared.
Enjoy a freshly cooked dinner while your guides brief you on the next day’s adventure.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Simba Camp
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave and Kikelewa Camp
Elevation
- Start: 2,625 metres
- Camp: 3,600 metres
Distance: Approximately 11 Kilometres
Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours
After breakfast, today’s trail leaves the forest behind as the landscape gradually changes into open moorland.
The first section leads to Second Cave, where you stop briefly to enjoy magnificent views across the plains stretching into Kenya.
After a short rest and lunch, you continue towards Kikelewa Camp.
The trail becomes steeper as you approach camp, but the spectacular scenery makes every step worthwhile.
Large volcanic rocks, colourful alpine vegetation, and increasingly impressive mountain views surround you throughout the afternoon.
Upon arrival, your guides will conduct a routine health check before dinner to monitor your acclimatization.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Elevation
- Start: 3,600 metres
- Camp: 4,330 metres
Distance: Approximately 5 Kilometres
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Today’s hike is shorter but climbs steadily towards one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic campsites.
As you gain altitude, the impressive spires of Mawenzi Peak rise dramatically above the surrounding landscape.
The trail passes through alpine vegetation before reaching the beautiful Mawenzi Tarn Camp, nestled beneath the towering volcanic cliffs.
This peaceful campsite is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and offers excellent opportunities for photography.
After lunch, you can relax while enjoying breathtaking views of Mawenzi Peak as your body continues adjusting to the altitude.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Mawenzi Tarn
Maximum Elevation: Approximately 4,500 metres
Return Elevation: 4,330 metres
Hiking Time: 2–4 Hours
Today is dedicated entirely to acclimatization.
After breakfast, you will take a guided acclimatization hike towards the upper slopes surrounding Mawenzi before returning to camp.
This important “climb high, sleep low” strategy allows your body to adapt more effectively to higher elevations while reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
Throughout the day, your guides will continue monitoring your oxygen levels, hydration, and overall wellbeing.
The afternoon is free to rest, read, take photographs, or simply enjoy one of the most beautiful campsites on Mount Kilimanjaro.
This additional acclimatization day is one of the reasons the seven-day Rongai itinerary has a much better summit success rate than the six-day option.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Elevation
- Start: 4,330 metres
- Camp: 4,700 metres
Distance: Approximately 9 Kilometres
Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours
Today’s journey crosses the vast alpine desert known as “The Saddle,” a broad plateau lying between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak.
The landscape here is stark and dramatic, with very little vegetation surviving in the harsh conditions.
Although the trail is relatively gentle, the thinner air means your guides will encourage a slow and steady pace.
By early afternoon, you will arrive at Kibo Hut, your final campsite before the summit attempt.
After an early dinner, your guides will help you prepare your summit equipment, ensuring your clothing, headlamp, water, and snacks are ready.
You will then rest for several hours before waking shortly before midnight for the most exciting part of your journey.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut
Elevation
- Summit: 5,895 metres
- Overnight: 3,720 metres
Distance: Approximately 22 Kilometres
Hiking Time: 11–14 Hours
Around midnight, your summit climb begins beneath a sky filled with stars.
Moving slowly together, your team ascends the steep volcanic slopes while your guides carefully monitor everyone’s condition.
After several hours of determined climbing, you reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim just as the first colours of sunrise begin to appear.
From here, the trail continues along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak.
Watching the sunrise illuminate Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and the vast African landscape below is one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire expedition.
Finally, you arrive at Uhuru Peak, standing proudly at 5,895 metres above sea level.
Take time to celebrate this incredible achievement, capture photographs, and enjoy the spectacular surroundings before beginning your descent.
You return to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for dinner and a well-deserved night’s sleep.
Although this is the longest day of the expedition, it is also the day that transforms months of preparation into an unforgettable accomplishment.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation
- Start: 3,720 metres
- Finish: 1,860 metres
Distance: Approximately 20 Kilometres
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Your final morning begins with breakfast before descending through the moorland and rainforest zones.
As you lose altitude, the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen, making the walk increasingly comfortable.
The beautiful forest provides one last opportunity to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s remarkable biodiversity.
Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete the park exit formalities before receiving your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate.
Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a comfortable bed, hot shower, and celebration await.
Standing on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is an achievement that few people experience, and the memories of your journey will remain with you long after you leave Tanzania.
